For the faithful readers...

Hammersmith Happenings will remain. Thanks to the friends and family that let me know that you're making it worth my time to post. My mom even called wondering if I was ok after reading yesterday's entry. I reassured her I was fine, just taking inventory I guess. :o)

So anyway, Seth had his 4-month check-up on Wednesday. All I knew going into it was that we were meeting with the nurse practitioner to discuss solid foods. Which we did. We went over the plan: we're going to attempt starting with rice cereal once a day for 4 days, then twice a day for 4 days, then on to carrots. I'm thinking of making my own veggies for Seth, I just need to read how to do it.

Anyway, he had a great visit. The nurse was very impressed at his head control and strength. She said it was beyond that of a 4-month old. She also said neurologically that he was doing very well. He was very tolerant of being examined and had great self-control. When he got his shots, he only cried during the shots then immediately stopped. She was very pleased. She did say that she saw some things that were more like a 3-month old (his gestational age) but she didn't tell me what those were. I'm glad, I won't have to worry about it then.

Seth has some dry skin and she thought that he also has sensitive skin. She gave me some lotion samples to use. I have used the Johnson & Johnson pink lotion only a few times, even though the hospital said not to use it. The nurse recommended Aveeno or the Eucerin lotion she gave me. We'll see if it clears it up, we might have to use a body wash for sensitive skin instead of the Johnson & Johnson.

Oh! How could I forget?! His stats: he gained 3 pounds since last visit and now weighs 12lbs. 8oz. He grew 3 inches and is 25 1/4 inches long. His height is in the 45-50 percentile, his weight is in the 10th percentile. He's long and skinny I guess.

Since Wednesday, I've tried the rice cereal twice now. I have thinned it out quite a bit so the transition goes smoothly. So far my method has been to give him spoons of the cereal in between sips on the bottle because he is so hungry that when you give him a tiny spoon with a miniscule amount of cereal on it, he gets frustrated. So, I let him chug on the bottle, take it away (which he hates), then slip in some cereal. If I'm lucky, he keeps the cereal in his mouth. I've read this is normal for them to spit it back out and to keep trying. Which is what I do. I'm sure he doesn't even get half the cereal I prepare, but it's a start. Does anyone have any tips that worked for them when introducing the cereal to their children?

Angela,

My Husband Chris Walker has sent me the link to your blog because he thought that I might have some suggestions for you with Seth. Our son Ephriam is very tall and skinny. He is in the 75% in height and only in the 3% in weight (yes finding clothes is tough) he has been like this all his life but has followed the same growth curve so no concerns. Ephriam also liked his cereal to be spooned faster then you could get it on but it has really taught him to be patient in eating. I also thickened his cereal up a little faster then they normally want you to so that way he got more since he had all the control and didn't have choking problems. Our daughter Kendra on the other hand loved to eat and I never had enough for her to eat. My advise is to not give Seth the bottle but to just spoon as fast as you can or else he will expect that as you feed him more solid foods. I hope that this helps you with Seth.

Thank you Faith for the advice.

Clothes are becoming an issue. He needs 3-6mos. in length, but pants that size are too big around the waist and practically fall off.

Hi Ang! I loved this book called Super Baby Food http://www.amazon.com/Super-Baby-Food-Ruth-Yaron/dp/0965260313/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1199571978&sr=8-1

Some of it was more than I could commit to but it has lots of good information on which veggies to use and when and which ones are safe (some aren't good to use I learned).

Anyways, good luck and have fun!

Yay for blog staying!!!! You update a lot more than many of my other friends. Faith knows more about the baby feeding stuff. I am just good at making funny noises and goofy faces trying to get them to keep more in their mouth than out. Singing worked for one of my kids, and I don't sing that well, so I only did that when nobody could hear me. You should post messy face pictures, those are great!!!

I am so glad you decided to keep your blog! I check it at least once a week to see how you are doing! Seth is so cute I would so miss seeing your updated pics!! I'm sorry I haven't commented! You were my inspiration to start a blog! I am sure not many people read mine either, but it has been a good way for me to keep a few people updated!

I just started feeding Alayna solids too! I remember Daniel hating it at first. We just kept trying a little each day. We did wait until they were 6 months though so that their tongue reflex to push everything out was about gone and we were more confident their system was ready. That made it a little easier! You can always wait a little while, especially since he was born a month early. Not all babies are ready for solids that early.

Yea, I remember the skinny waist problems! :-) Daniel could not wear pants until around 9 months because they just kept falling off. And even then, they were size 6 month pants and looked more like capris! He wore a lot of pjs, overalls and coveralls! I finally found the pants with the adjustable waists work well!

I do remember it is normal for the tongue relfex action to spit it out, keep trying! He'll get it! If you EVER come across Creamed spinach from Gerber Please let me know...I quit buying it yrs ago because I do not think they make it anymore, Believe it or not Adam and Jelena have been asking about it and would SO love me to get them some...lol! Their favorite was the cream corn but they quit making that long before the spinach, funny how they still talk of wanting it! Crazy!
but healthy enough of a snack to have IF I should be so lucky to find it!

Girl, you have to keep your blog...that is how I see photos of Seth. I am getting to the end point. I am tired all the time and he's movements are starting to hurt.

Ricky has the same trouble. He is very thin for his age, and we have trouble finding clothes that fit. Wesley seems to be easier to find clothes for. He is only 7 months old, but we have to switch to size 4 diapers already. Ricky is only in size 6 diapers.

Hi Ang,
I think your blog is great! I usually do not check my e-mail or blog sites but once a week!
Anyways my suggestion on the solid foods is to wait. Most babies are not ready to eat at such a young age off a spoon! Wait until Seth starts showing a interest when you and Evan are eating. American Academy of Pediatrics recommends you wait until 6 months to introduce solid foods. Although cereal at 4 months is OK if your baby is ready!
I made most of Tylers baby foods. The Super Baby Food book is great!! You can call me anytime!
Love, April
